After the Packers loss to the Carolina Panthers, fans were heavily disappointed about the way they always seemed to struggle against bad teams. Matt Lafleur and the Packers seemed to play down to inferior opponents, and it wasn't the first time; this was a regular occurrence for this team. What was more frustrating for fans was that our defense is playing like one of the best in the league right now, while the offense was losing the team games. After so many years with an elite offense led by Aaron Rodgers and being sold by poor defense, it felt strange to have it be the other way around. Unfortunately, this trend would not change in Green Bay's Monday night matchup vs Philadelphia.
The game was an absolute slugfest, with the score 0-0 at halftime, prompting many fans to take to social media to complain about how boring it was, but this is what I was expecting to see. Maybe not to the extent of being 0-0 at halftime, but both teams have elite, Super Bowl-caliber defenses with offenses that often struggle to put it all together. The game finally got its first score when Philadelphia hit a field goal in the 3rd quarter. The Eagles would extend their lead when Devonta Smith caught a ball over a Packers defender for the game's long-awaited first touchdown.
The Packers would finally answer with a Josh Jacobs rushing touchdown with 6 minutes left in the game, but it would be too little too late as the Packers failed to put together a game-winning drive. Nick Sirianni would surprisingly call a 4th down pass play with less than 40 seconds to go when the Packers had no timeouts left and failed to convert, giving the Packers one last chance. It wouldn't matter in the end as the Eagles walked away with a 10-7 win. It was another offensive disappointment for the Packers, and a back-to-back loss for a fanbase that had high expectations for this team. On the bright side, they played competitively against the best team in the NFC and would face their rival, the New York Giants, next week.
The game vs the New York Giants started with a Giants touchdown on their first drive, a bad start for the defense. Things would get worse as Jordan Love and Josh Jacobs would leave the game with injuries. Malik Willis came in for Love and led a touchdown drive capped off with a fantastic throw to Christian Watson. After a missed extra point and another good drive, Green Bay went up 13-7 after a strong run by Emmanuel Wilson. New York responded before halftime with a rushing touchdown of their own, but a penalty after the play caused Younghoe Koo to miss an extra point of his own.
Green Bay’s opening 2nd half drive ended in a touchdown, where they would miss their 2nd extra point of the game. The next score would be a Giants touchdown, putting them up 20-19. Green Bay now had to answer, and answer they did. A clutch catch by Savion Williams, an incredible touchdown by Christian Watson, and a successful 2-point conversion would give them the lead back. A costly interception in the endzone by Jameis Winston would give the Packers the ball back with a chance to drain the clock. The Giants would get one last opportunity for a Hail Mary, but would fall short after Jameis Winston got hit from behind by Micah Parsons, securing the win for Green Bay.
This game was a lot closer than Packer fans would have liked, but it was still a win. The offense looked a lot better this game, which was much needed. All units will need to be firing on all cylinders for the rest of the season for Green Bay, as they face the Lions, Vikings twice, Bears twice, Broncos, and Ravens, one of the hardest remaining schedules in the league.
